I was from a small town and had gotten a lot of computer experience that had gone nowhere in terms of getting me an actual job. I had come to Washington, DC as a laborer in concrete construction with Miller and Long. We moved to a room in Dupont Circle in Northwest, and we were impressed with the monuments, the people, the lifestyle and the money. My girlfriend and I had one of our famous weekend-long talks (you'd have to know us...) and I told her I wanted to make a change. She told me I'd have to get off my butt and quit watching Star Trek and do it. I decided to set up my first web site.
Since I didn't have a PC at the time, I went to the local cybercafe and put together a site for a friend of mine. (He had one that completely SUCKED!) This went well and soon I was doing sites for a lot
of my friends.
I'm still a trekkie, but I definitely filled my free time :) GAP Web Design was born and has survived moving and growing (we now also do Flash, SEO, PHP, & database) for three years now. While in DC, I worked for JR's Bar & Grill, Cobalt, consultants, escorts, political hopefuls, and just about everyone else. Most of these clients have generated many a fond memory... I now have friends as sales reps in Virginia Beach, DC, and my new South Florida digs where I have a cool little home office in Fort Lauderdale. My girlfriend, once she got used to just how much of my time this filled, became my designer's eye and still is.
